Starting a Side Hustle Alongside a 9-to-5

Starting a Side Hustle Alongside a 9-to-5

The fantasy is a tidy second income that grows quietly until you can wave goodbye to the day job. The reality, in the early months, is editing a website at half past ten on a Tuesday when you'd rather be asleep. A side hustle alongside full-time work is entirely doable, but a few practical things will decide whether it stays a pleasure or turns into a problem with your employer.

Check your contract first

Before you sell a single thing, read your employment contract properly. Many include clauses about outside work, conflicts of interest, or who owns intellectual property you create - and some require you to declare or seek permission for a second job. If your side hustle competes with your employer, or uses their kit, time or clients, you're walking into trouble. Most employers are relaxed about a weekend craft business or a bit of freelance writing in an unrelated field; almost none are relaxed about you quietly building a rival. When in doubt, ask, because asking forgiveness is a poor strategy when your livelihood is the thing at stake.

Tax and the trading allowance

HMRC lets you earn up to £1,000 of trading income in a tax year without needing to declare it or register for Self Assessment - the trading allowance. Cross that threshold and you'll need to register, complete a Self Assessment return, and pay tax and National Insurance on the profit. Keep records from the first sale, not from the moment you panic about it in January.

Protecting your time and your day job

Your employer is paying for your attention between nine and five, so keep the side hustle firmly outside those hours and off their equipment. That's not just etiquette - blur the line and you hand them a legitimate grievance. Protect your energy too; running yourself into the ground helps neither income.

  • Set a fixed couple of evenings a week for the side hustle rather than letting it bleed into every spare moment.
  • Keep a separate record of income and expenses so the tax position is never a mystery.
  • Some weeks the day job will need everything you've got, and protecting it has to win - the side hustle can wait a fortnight, your salary can't.

Plenty of solid businesses started as something done after hours by someone exhausted but stubborn. Just make sure the thing paying your mortgage stays happy while you build the thing that might replace it.
